I’ve been working towards this idea of an on-farm market this year, and so far all that I’ve been able to do is think and dream with my feet by the fire. But Now that spring is only a couple of weeks away, things are starting to come together!
- Our Large Black pigs arrive from Upper Canada Heritage Meats in May
- My vegetable seeds are ordered from Vessey’s, Cottage Gardener, and Terra Edibles
- My herb seeds are ordered from Richter’s
And just today, another piece of the puzzle was added. Our pumpkins, decorative squash, gourds, and corn seeds were all ordered, along with some 250 Gladiolus corms, and somewhere in the thousands of zinnia, Salvia, sweet pea and sunflower seeds. Our little stand will offer not only eggs and meat, but cut flowers, sweet corn, and for fall: decorative pumpkins, squash and straw bales.
We’re also working on getting products like maple syrup and honey from other local suppliers.
I also recently joined Kawartha Choice, and Harvest Ontario, both excellent networks for small farmers like myself. This year the idea of “homesteading” will become more than just a way of life, but also an excellent and fulfilling business venture as well.
It looks like this is going to be one busy summer, but I’m lucky to have help from some amazing friends and family. I’m up for the challenge. After months and months of “thinking” things are finally starting to fall in to place! *Big Sigh of Relief*
